Neighborhood drives are most successful when they feel visible, personal, and community-driven. You can build momentum by sharing PORCH in action first. Tell the story of the food donation, from porch to pantry. Take a picture of the food on the porch, in the car to the pantry, at the pantry, and then with pantry staff. The 'little bag that could,' if you will. When neighbors regularly see and hear about the drive, participation and awareness will grow.
Create Clear Goals and a Sense of Fun
Clear goals can make drives more engaging for participants. Some chapters have found success with friendly competitions between streets or neighborhoods, themed collections, milestone celebrations, or creative activities like Canstruction-style displays. Adding a sense of fun and shared purpose can help collections stand out amid busy schedules and competing priorities.
Be Mindful of Economic and Seasonal Factors
Collection results can vary depending on the time of year and broader economic conditions. Many families are balancing tighter grocery budgets, which may affect donation levels even among committed supporters. Timing matters: collections held with adequate notice and outside of financially stressful periods often see stronger participation. Ask your local grocery store when they're likely to have sales and schedule collections during that time (while you're there, tell them about PORCH).
Build Trust Through Impact Stories
Neighbors are more motivated to give when they understand who benefits from the donations and how the food will be used. Sharing photos, local impact numbers, pantry stories, or updates from recipient organizations can strengthen community connection and reinforce the value of each contribution. Show how this chapter is part of many chapters, locally, in the state, and then the U.S.
Pantry Media Spotlight: PORCH Youngsville
PORCH Youngsville supports The Journey Ministry Pantry and they shared impact numbers from the May donation. Pantries sharing impact helps chapters grow and increases the visibility of both PORCH and the pantry!
Beyond the Numbers: Your Reporting Matters
Thank you for taking the time to report your impact. Every collection represents neighbors helping neighbors and communities coming together to support local families.
We want to emphasize that what you do, your acts of service, leadership, and care for your community, matters. While people matter more than numbers, at the same time, numbers, combined with your stories and photos, are how we demonstrate the impact you and your volunteers are making every month.
It's more than numbers. Your data, photos, and stories help us share everyone's work across the country and demonstrate impact to funders and supporters who support our work, too. (See PORCH Youngsville above!)
Because of your reporting, we can advocate for you, acquire more resources to help you grow, encourage others to join you, and launch more chapters nationwide.
We are grateful for the time, energy, and care you invest in your communities each month. Thank you for making a difference and for helping show the collective impact of PORCH Communities.

Stefanie (Roanoke) recently raised a question that many chapter leaders are likely navigating as well. The responses from fellow leaders highlight the value of this network as a place to exchange ideas, share challenges, troubleshoot obstacles, and learn from one another’s experiences.
